5G technology is one of the most widely debated innovations of recent years, associated both with promises of ultra-fast internet speeds and with numerous controversies and conspiracy theories. In Romania, the rollout of 5G networks is closely monitored by ANCOM, the authority that regulates communications. This article examines official data, ANCOM statements and what tests show about radiation emitted by antennas.
To complement the information above, see Fear of Technology in Romania: Myths and Realities About 5G, Wi-Fi, AI, Chip-Enabled ID Cards and Mental Health, an article that explores an aspect directly related to this subject.
The pace of 5G network development in Romania
According to ANCOM data, the number of 5G connections in Romania reached 2.9 million in the first half of 2024, an increase of 25% compared with the previous period. These account for 13% of all mobile connections, while more than 12% of mobile internet traffic is carried over 5G.
Controversies and public perceptions
A recent study shows that 4 in 10 Romanians believe that 5G antennas are dangerous to health. In response, ANCOM stated that 5G networks comply with the same safety standards as earlier technologies and that “there is no scientific evidence of danger to the public”.
What ANCOM says about radiation levels
Sorin Grindeanu, president of ANCOM, said that the monitor-emf.ro platform makes it possible to check electromagnetic radiation levels in Romania. According to him, “not once has a quarter of the maximum permitted limit been exceeded”.
Disinformation and scientific clarifications
Contrary to conspiracy theories, experts say that 5G technology does not produce ionising radiation and that the energy level emitted is similar to that of 4G networks. International organisations such as the IEEE, ICNIRP, ITU and FCC confirm that there are no relevant health risks.

The 5G network in Romania is developing rapidly, but the controversies persist. According to tests and official statements, there are no demonstrated risks to public health. Platforms such as monitor-emf.ro provide transparency and confirm that radiation remains below permitted limits.
