iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max: the differences that matter before pre-ordering

iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max: the differences that matter before pre-ordering

Technology12 min read

On September 9, 2026, Apple unveiled three flagship models: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. The latter is the company’s first foldable iPhone. While names such as “iPhone Fold” and “iPhone Ultra” circulated before the event, the official name is iPhone Duo. For buyers in Romania, the decision is not just about display size or price: the iPhone Duo is eSIM-only, while the Apple Intelligence features announced for iOS 27 do not include Romanian among their supported languages.

The short answer is straightforward: the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the safer choice for photography, zoom and battery life; the iPhone Duo makes sense for people who will genuinely use its 7.6-inch inner display every day for two apps, documents, video or games. The iPhone 18 Pro remains the option for those who want the same Pro features in a more compact form factor.

What Apple launched and when the models reach stores

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Pre-orders for these two models begin on Saturday, September 12, with initial availability starting on Friday, September 18. The company has confirmed 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities for both models.

The iPhone Duo follows a separate schedule: pre-orders begin on October 16, 2026, and sales start on October 23, 2026, in the first wave of markets. Apple notes that availability varies by country and retail partner. In Romania, the actual delivery date and list price should be checked with authorised retailers before ordering; at the time of checking, the iSTYLE page for an iPhone 18 Pro showed an option to be notified when it becomes available, rather than a final public price for the model viewed.

One important detail: Apple did not unveil a standard iPhone 18 at the September 9 event. As a result, there is not yet an official sale date or official price for a possible entry-level iPhone 18. Any schedule currently published for that model should be treated as an estimate, not confirmed information.

The useful comparison: a large display all the time, or only when needed

Model The real advantage The main compromise Best suited to
iPhone 18 Pro Pro camera features and the A20 Pro chip in a more compact form factor Smaller display than the Pro Max and Duo People who want a powerful camera without a very large phone
iPhone 18 Pro Max Full Pro camera system, higher claimed battery life and a large conventional display Large size, without the flexibility of a foldable Photo and video, battery life, and media consumption without the compromises of a folding mechanism
iPhone Duo 7.6-inch inner display and two-app multitasking Less versatile cameras than the Pro models, eSIM-only operation and a substantially higher US entry price Documents, email, browsing, video, games and mobile work on an expanded screen

All three phones use the A20 Pro chip. The difference, then, is not between a “fast” model and a “weak” one, but between priorities. The Duo is not an iPhone 18 Pro Max that folds. It is a device designed for a different way of use: when closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display; when opened, it reaches 7.6 inches. Apple says its inner surface is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display.

That difference can be valuable when reading a document, keeping a map open beside a conversation, following a presentation or multitasking. But it does not automatically change simple tasks: calls, messages, payments, quick photos and one-handed use. For these, the Pro and Pro Max retain the familiar ergonomics of a conventional phone.

Camera: why the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains the more logical choice for photography

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max have a Pro camera system with three 48MP cameras: main, ultra-wide and telephoto. For the first time on an iPhone, the main camera introduces a variable aperture—a mechanism that can alter the lens opening to better control light and depth of field. Apple mentions four adjustment levels in the Camera app. This is a feature particularly relevant to portrait photography, difficult lighting and users who want control after capture, rather than automatic processing alone.

For more information on Apple, see iPhone 17: A new era for Apple smartphones, which provides complementary details on this topic.

The iPhone Duo uses a Dual Fusion system: a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. It offers optical-quality zoom up to 2x, while Apple attributes optical-quality zoom up to 8x to the Pro models through their telephoto system. The foldable display helps with framing, outer-display previews and hands-free photography, but it does not replace a telephoto lens.

The practical conclusion is this: if photography at concerts, sporting events, of animals, on trips or of distant portraits is a priority, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the more complete choice. If you mainly photograph people nearby, documents, products or everyday content, the Duo may be sufficient, and its foldable form may even be more convenient for some shots.

For editing and visual content, the Pro models also feature Apple Reference Image. There is, however, a relevant limitation in the European Union: Apple says the creation of reference images will not be available at launch on the iPhone 18 Pro in the EU, although reference images can be developed and viewed on compatible devices. This matters at a time when the origin of images is increasingly difficult to verify; labels and metadata are useful indicators, not a guarantee that a video or photograph is authentic. For context, we separately explain why an AI label alone is not enough to verify a deepfake.

Battery life and charging: Apple’s figures must be read with their conditions

Apple cites up to 36 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but these figures apply to eSIM-only versions. For the Pro Max, the company also cites up to 30 hours of use in a consumption model based on real-world usage data. The iPhone Duo is rated for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display and up to 24 hours of use when both displays are used equally.

These are not directly comparable with a real day of use. Video playback, 5G browsing, hotspot use, cameras, high brightness and gaming place different demands on the battery. Even so, the comparison makes one thing clear: the Pro Max is the most predictable bet for long battery life, while the Duo is not a foldable that drastically sacrifices battery life, but achieves its maximum figures in different display scenarios.

For charging, Apple promises up to 50% in approximately 15 minutes for the wired iPhone 18 Pro and up to 50% in around 20 minutes for the Duo. The technical conditions matter: for maximum speed, Apple requires a 60W-capable USB-C cable and a USB PD 3.1 charger with AVS. Not every powerful USB-C charger automatically delivers the same speed. Before buying a new adapter, it is worth checking how to choose the right power rating, cable and ports for a USB-C charger.

iPhone Duo is eSIM-only: the essential check before buying in Romania

The iPhone Duo does not support a physical SIM card anywhere in the world: it is eSIM-only. This is probably the most important practical difference for a buyer in Romania. An eSIM is a digital SIM profile, installed on the phone through an operator activation process, usually using a QR code or directly from an app.

It is not enough to know that “eSIM exists in Romania”. You need to check whether your operator and the type of subscription or prepaid SIM you use offer activation for that device, and what happens when you change phones, lose the device or delete the eSIM profile. Orange currently explains eSIM activation and transfer for compatible Apple devices. Vodafone offers eSIM through its Vodafone EASY digital service. By contrast, Telekom Mobile states that, from May 9, 2026, it no longer offers eSIM to new customers or when replacing an eSIM profile, although users who already had eSIM on that date can retain it.

Before pre-ordering a Duo, ask your operator for a specific answer to four questions:

  • Is the iPhone Duo included in its list of compatible eSIM devices on the delivery date?
  • Can you move your current number from a physical SIM to an eSIM without changing your subscription?
  • What is the procedure for recovering your number if the phone is lost, faulty or reset?
  • Can you use a second eSIM profile at the same time for travel or work?

Apple does not present the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max as eSIM-only in Romania. Apple says versions without a physical SIM are reserved for a list of markets that does not include Romania. Even so, the exact version sold locally should be confirmed before purchase.

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI: the limitation for Romanian at launch

The iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and Duo are promoted heavily through Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI. Apple announces the launch of Siri AI in beta with iOS 27 and says that some features may vary depending on region, legislation and language. The list of languages communicated by the company includes English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Turkish and Chinese, among others, but does not include Romanian.

This does not mean that the phone cannot be used in Romanian, nor that all Siri functions are unavailable. It means it is not correct to buy the new model assuming that all of the artificial-intelligence features shown in demonstrations will work fully in Romanian from day one. For features that process messages, emails, photos and on-screen content, the configured language and regional availability can substantially change the experience.

That is a good reason to avoid decisions based solely on the promise of “AI”. For many users, the camera, battery, size, mobile operator and support period will be more concrete criteria than a beta feature whose behaviour in Romanian has not yet been announced.

Prices: what is confirmed and what cannot yet be calculated correctly for Romania

Apple has confirmed US starting prices before local taxes: $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro, $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max and $1,999 for the iPhone Duo, all in the 256GB configuration. The Duo therefore starts $700 above the Pro Max in the US market.

It would not be correct to mechanically convert these amounts into Romanian lei and present them as Romanian prices. VAT, exchange rates, distribution costs, trade-in promotions, stock and each retailer’s policy can alter the final price. In the case of the Duo in particular, local availability and initial volumes may matter more than currency conversion. When public Romanian prices appear, readers can separately follow the BNR exchange rate and currency movements, but the exchange rate should not be confused with an official retail price.

The real cost also includes accessories. For the Duo, Apple announced a $79 case and a $129 folio with a stand in the US. If you plan to use the large display for video, calls or desk work, the stand, charger and protection may be part of the actual budget, rather than merely decorative options.

Who should choose each model

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if you want Pro performance without a large form factor

This is the balanced option for those who want the main camera with variable aperture, a telephoto lens, the A20 Pro chip and vapour-chamber cooling, but do not want the size of a Pro Max. It is probably the easiest model to recommend to people upgrading from a relatively recent iPhone Pro who value mobility more than a huge display.

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if camera and battery life are the priority

The Pro Max is the phone for photographers, creators who shoot a lot of video, frequent travellers or people who want the largest conventional display without paying for and managing a foldable. The telephoto lens and superior battery-life figures are concrete arguments. It is also the choice with fewer unknowns: no hinge and no mandatory switch to eSIM.

Choose the iPhone Duo only if the inner display solves a recurring need

The Duo should not be bought simply for its novelty. It is worth considering if you read and annotate documents, frequently switch between apps, work while travelling, watch a great deal of video content or want a device close to a small tablet that fits in a pocket when closed. It also has useful model-specific elements, such as flexible positions for video calls, support for the Apple Pencil with USB-C announced for later in 2026, and an anti-reflective finish on the inner display.

If your main activity is zoom photography, if you use a physical SIM with an operator that has no new eSIM option, or if you cannot justify the large budget difference from the Pro Max, the Duo is not the rational choice. It is a new form factor, not a mandatory upgrade for every iPhone owner.

Verdict: Duo is a different kind of iPhone, not the “best version” for everyone

At its September 9, 2026 launch, Apple divided its premium range more clearly: the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are photo, video and performance tools in the established format, while the iPhone Duo is the phone for screen space and multitasking. For most buyers who put the camera, battery life and simplicity first, the Pro Max remains the pragmatic option. The Duo becomes justified when its 7.6-inch display will be used consistently, not occasionally.

In Romania, eSIM compatibility and the availability of AI features in the preferred language should be checked before pre-ordering. They are two details less spectacular than the hinge or the A20 Pro chip, but they can determine whether the new phone makes life simpler or adds complications.
