Geomagnetic activity – latest available interval
The available geomagnetic Kp index is 3.0. Higher values indicate stronger geomagnetic activity; the current source and interval status are shown in the panel below.
Geomagnetic activity – latest available interval
Aurora is extremely unlikely in Romania at this Kp level.
Interval Kp: 13 Oct 03:00–06:00 · 00:00–03:00 UTC · GFZ PREWhat do Kp, geomagnetic storm and aurora mean?
It is a global index from 0 to 9 showing how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is. The higher Kp is, the stronger the geomagnetic activity.
This is the scale used for geomagnetic storms. G1 means a minor storm and G5 an extreme storm. G levels generally begin at Kp 5.
It is light produced when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth's upper atmosphere and magnetic field.
Usually not. Strong geomagnetic storms, clear skies, an unobstructed northern horizon and low light pollution are needed. Even with a high Kp, visibility is not guaranteed.
Kp describes geomagnetic activity on a planetary scale. By itself, it is not an exact forecast of aurora visibility in a specific city.
