On 16 August 2025, the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued orange and yellow warnings for extreme heat and atmospheric instability across Romania. High temperatures and severe storms threaten several regions—here is what you need to know.

For more information on Romania’s heatwave, see ANM issues heatwave warning: temperatures above 40°C in Romania, which provides additional details on the subject.

Intense heat: warnings and affected areas

Orange code (16 August, 12:00–21:00)

  • Bihor, Arad and Timiș counties are under an orange warning for heat and severe thermal discomfort, with maximum temperatures of 37–38°C and the temperature-humidity index (THI; Romanian: ITU) exceeding 80.

Yellow code (16 August, 12:00–21:00)

  • Maramureș, northern Crișana, southern Banat, most of Transylvania, western and southern Oltenia, and south-western and central Muntenia are under a yellow warning for heat and high thermal discomfort, with highs of 33–37°C and the THI slightly above 80.

Yellow code (17 August, 12:00–21:00)

  • Southern Oltenia and south-western and central Muntenia will be affected by heat and high thermal discomfort, with highs of 35–36°C and the THI possibly reaching the critical threshold of 80.

Atmospheric instability: storms and downpours

Yellow code (17 August, 13:00–21:00)

  • In Transylvania, Maramureș, southern Banat, northern Moldavia and mountain areas, temporary atmospheric instability is expected, with torrential downpours, lightning, stronger winds (gusts of 50–70 km/h) and isolated hail measuring 1–3 cm. Rainfall totals of 20–30 L/m² are expected, locally exceeding 40–50 L/m².

Yellow code (17 August, 21:00–18 August, 10:00)

  • Maramureș, Transylvania, northern and central Moldavia, and mountain areas will see periods of similar instability, with gusts of 50–55 km/h and small hail (1–2 cm). Rainfall totals will range from 20–25 L/m², locally reaching 35–40 L/m².

Recommendations

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity and prolonged sun exposure during the heatwave period (12:00–21:00).
  • Stay hydrated frequently and go to bed early to avoid tropical nights.
  • Monitor ANM’s official channels for updates and nowcasting warnings.
  • In the event of storms, identify a safe shelter (indoors, with windows closed), keep away from trees and avoid travelling through exposed areas.
